Religious Education

Our Approach

At Twyford, the Christian ethos is at the heart of our school and we are under the Oxford Diocese. We believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. The aim of Religious Education in our school is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge of the religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour, and to develop an understanding of the different members of our wider community. Learning about religions, beliefs and ways of living is also a vehicle through which children develop their understanding of themselves, others and the world.

At Twyford School, we have adopted the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus 2022. It provides a set of ‘enquiries’ for each key stage which we use as the basis for our curriculum planning. We teach one (or two maximum) enquiries per whole term and the children will learn about their own beliefs and those of the principal religions through each enquiry.

The following learning process lies at the heart of learning about religions, beliefs and ways of living.

  1. What does it mean to be me? (pupils’ own experience and self-concept)
  2. What does it mean to be you? (religious/worldview concepts and content)
  3. What does it mean to be human? (universal human experience)

As a Church of England school, at least 50% of our RE lessons are devoted to Christianity. We ensure this by making the first half of our lesson sequence (usually the first half term) based on Christianity. After that, to ensure coverage, each age group explores their focus religion/s and then others.

Key Stage 1: Christianity and Judaism

Lower Key Stage 2: Christianity and Hinduism

Upper Key Stage 2: Christianity and Islam and Humanism
