Our Approach
At Twyford School, we aim to foster a love of learning for Geography and want to ensure that children develop the necessary skills to become more curious about the world they live in as well as recognise their place in a global society. We encourage our children to explore not only the local area, but develop a global awareness of the world around them. We want our children to gain a greater personal understanding of the world, their personal place in it and becoming young, curious geographers.
Within Early Years, our children are guided in taking their first steps in the role of a geographer through exploration and play. Discovering and beginning to make sense of their physical world and community. Children find out about people, places, technology and the environment to ensure they are curious and asking questions about the world around them.
The foundational skills for Geography developed within our Early Years setting and are built upon throughout KS1 and KS2. Due to our mixed-aged classes, we work on a two-year rolling programme with three Geography topics covered each year. Key knowledge and skills for each topic are mapped out across the school to ensure that the knowledge children are exposed to, builds progressively year upon year and children develop key skills systematically. We use the National Curriculum to select objectives and tailor learning and meet the needs of children in each phase of our school.
All areas of Geography are covered within our discrete timetabled lessons ensuring that all are covered sufficiently within each two-year rolling programme:
- Location Knowledge
- Place Knowledge
- Human and Physical Geography and
- Geographical Skills and Fieldwork
